11 April 2007 – Kuala Lumpur: Dally Sui Hlei Par, a 7 year-old refugee girl who was found murdered and mutilated a week after she went missing on March 20 was finally laid to rest in Kuala Lumpur this afternoon.
More than 500 Chins and local sympathizers attended the emotional funeral and burial service at Cheras Christian cemetery. Funeral goers braved the drizzling rain to pay their last respect to Dally whose decomposing body was discovered under the bushes near the family’s home with both her hands severed at the wrists.
Dally’s peers and classmates sang an emotional farewell song dedicated to her memory.
Like other refugee and undocumented children, Dally didn’t have access to formal primary education in Malaysia. Chin refugee children receive informal education in community schools run by groups such as Chin Students Organization and Chin Women’s Organization.

Hi Ed. Damn, what a sad story. I actually just met some Chin people recently. They were with the Burmese democratic alliance, who were protesting at the Chevron shareholders meeting at their world HQ in San Ramon last month. I was there with the Filipino community. One of the Chin guys shared with me his amazing ornamental drum. The Ecuadorian community was also there. It's wierd how we were all united through the fact that Chevron is screwing over our "homelands", but it was beautiful nevertheless.
Anyway, the real reason I'm writing is to thank you for your really kind comment on my blog. I have since removed the post, as I didn't want to freak my parents out. Anyway, I'm glad I wrote it; I need to keep a record of my healing. I'm feeling a little better today, just so you know. I really appreciate what you had to say. It's something about caring and "giving a shit" that let's us see beyond the matrix, but unfortunately renders us so different from the majority of people. It can be so lonely unless we find our own kind. Maybe we have to create our own community of outsiders, huh? Keep up your great work and stay in touch :-) |
