Right now 'Ethnic Voices' [ed. now Burma Underground] consists of one person, me. Its questionable whether or not I'm even ethnic. My hope is that this blog will become a collaborative effort of many people, so if after reading this post, you're interest has been piqued, please let me know if you want to become involved! My goal is that 'Burma Underground' will serve as a valuable resource providing news and commentary on issues relating to Burma, particularly the ethnic resistance movement. There is an amazing network of grass-roots organizations in and around Burma which have been established by activists from the ethnic states in Burma. They form an integral part of the resistance movement, and yet, they are often overlooked in mainstream media overseas.
Although there are some great organizations in the west, and some great ethnic Burman organizations which are working for democracy, and which are working to educate the world about what is going on, their focus often overlooks what is happening in the ethnic states. What is happening there is nothing short of ethnic cleansing, and armed resistance groups have been fighting the government and its practice of 'Burmanization' for over 50 years. The ethnic resistance movement, or movements, as it is quite widespread and diverse, is becoming increasingly plugged into the internet. There are personal blogs, webpages and news sites which are collectively and publicly documenting an alternative history, and an alternative view on the Burmese situation. I hope that this blog will add another link to this network, providing news and commentary, and connecting people with a shared interest in the democratic resistance movements in Burma.
That being said, I need help! It won't work if I'm the only one doing it. I need people who are willing to help with blogging about current news, and also who are willing to write intelligent articles about relevant issues. I'm looking for stuff that will provoke discussion, so all the better if you're opinionated. If you're interested in being a regular contributor, let me know!

A warm welcome to you too! I look forward to reading about Burma on your site. Would like to subscribe, but this doesn't seem possible at present. I have occasional entries on Burma on my own blog, which may be of interest to you. http://cartside.civiblog.org/blog

Hi, Stefanie!
Thanks for stopping by, I hope I'll have more time to post some real articles soon. I'm still trying to figure out all the ins and outs of the blog here, but I think if you go to the left hand column, there is a 'login' box, underneath it should say, 'create reader account'. Just click on that, and once there you can manage your subscription options. I'll be sure to visit your own blog as well. Cheers, Tara |
