The 19th marked Aung San Suu Kyi's 61st birthday, another birthday spent under house arrest in Rangoon. This post is obviously a day late, but the post I wrote yesterday was eaten by the internet, and this is not an occasion that should be allowed to slip by without mention.

So here's wishing good health and well-being to Daw Suu for the year to come, and hope that she'll soon see the fruits of her sacrifice. This will have been her 10th or 11th birthday spent under house arrest. Demonstrations and events from L.A. to Dhaka were held to honor The Lady's birthday, with demonstrators calling for the junta to release her from house arrest and for the world to push for democracy in Burma. Daw Suu herself seems prepared to wait under house arrest until real changes towards democracy are implemented.

Whether Daw Aung San Suu Kyi was aware or not, she was well remembered and honored on her birthday.

STATEMENT ON THE 61ST ANNIVERSARY OF DAW AUNG SAN SUU KYI'S BIRTHDAY
From the Arakan Refugee Affairs Committee

Today is the 61st birth anniversary of Daw Aung San Suu Kyi, the 1991 Nobel Peace Prize Laureate and pro-democracy icon of Burma. It is not strange but unfortunate for her that she does not get the chance as before to celebrate her birthday with her near and dear ones, party leaders and workers, and the supporters due to the extension of her house arrest for another one year imposed by the despotic military rulers dubbed themselves SPDC (State Peace and Development Council).

Burmese people and international community expected that she would be freed from her detention after the junta allowed the UN envoy to call on her during his visit to Burma in the last week of May. But the tyrannical military authorities dashed their hopes by extending the time of her house arrest. Her party NLD (National League for Democracy) made a proposal in March that they would recognize the junta as the de jure government in return for calling the convention of parliament and for national reconciliation talks. But their attempt was in vain as the stubborn generals paid no heed to their proposal.

In conclusion, we would like to urge the international community to put pressure on the diehard military rulers to implement the following immediately for the Burmese people who are totally in distress and suffering many hardships.
  • To release all the political prisoners and detainees including Daw Aung San Suu Kyi to be able to start the talks for national reconciliation
  • To allow all the political parties including NLD for freely making their party activities.
  • To honour the 1990 election results and call the parliament to be able to discuss for the future of Burma.
  • To stop all kinds of atrocities and persecutions perpetrated against the people.
